i dunno why i haven't worn this dress sooner. i bought it about a year ago from twitch vintage and it's been hiding in my closet since. it was gray and chilly out today, so a colorful dress made the day a little brighter.

we got together to share our art journals and i forgot mine at home! but hillary and christy both shared theirs and i loved them. it's cool to see how we all take the same theme for the week and come up with something completely different. i'm looking forward to more sharing.

how did that damn groundhog get so smart? as soon as he saw his shadow, temperatures dropped in san diego and the rain came. i guess that's ok, though. it just means more time to wear my cape! and more time for brian to make jokes about my cape! last night he said, "you look like those nannies from nanny 911."

i had to take pics inside last night because it was too dark and rainy outside. i wore this for a thai food dinner date. mmmmm, thai foods. everything was going really well until my date tried to eat my thai fried rice and i had to threaten to fork her. apparently, i'm no good at sharin'.

i have an art journal buddies date on sunday. i guess that means i better start working on my journal. :-/ three of us signed up for the art journal all year e-course from red velvet. you should check it out! it's been fun being creative so far, although i tend to cram a few weeks into one night just before i meet up with my friends.

did you guys watch the superbowl yesterday? we had it on, but tank was much more interested in puppybowl.

we loved that there were so many pitty mixes featured this year. lucie was our favorite. we liked hunter too, he was a little boxer puppy.

yesterday after seeing all over the internets that don cornelius passed away, i spent some time watching a bunch of old soul train videos on youtube. that show used to be a big part of my saturday mornings. i loved the soul train line and after every episode i would go into my room, shut the door and practice all the moves.

so here's a little stuph secret...part of the reason why i liked soul train so much was because i used to imagine that cheryl song, the only chinese dancer on the show, was my mom (i'm japanese though). [queue laugh track] she was my favorite dancer. i loved her hair and wanted to dress like her.

i don't know my biological mother. i mean i met her when i popped out of her obviously, but shortly thereafter she and my father got divorced and he ended up with custody. he mostly kept everything he knew about her a secret and i don't remember anything about her myself. he showed me one picture of her. i thought she looked a lot like cheryl song. i also thought she looked a lot like dana, from barbie and the rockers. :-/

my bestest, goodest friend is moving away and i'm trying hard not to sink into a bout of depression. we had a going away brunch for her this weekend and i wore all black because i'm extra dramaticals.

my father used to like to buy jiffy mixes. he mostly bought the corn bread and blueberry muffin ones. they tasted good and were really inexpensive, so he stocked up on them.

i was grocery shopping over the holidays and picked up a box so i could make some mini muffins.

when i was in elementary school and jr. high, i always took care of my own breakfast and lunch before walking to school. sometimes i would bake a box of blueberry muffins while i was getting ready and then take all six muffins with me to eat while i walked. yes. all six. (remember the days when your metabolism wasn't your worst enemy?!)

i've since learned how to make delishus muffins with real ingredients, but sometimes those little imitation blueberries call my name. they fill the house with a sweet smell and make me feel like a kid again.

it's been almost two months since i've done a real outfit post! that's pretty sad. i find it hard sometimes to make time to take the pictures before i leave the house or while i'm out doing things. i'll have to figure that out...i have lots of cute things in my closet you guys haven't seen yet!!

i wore this out to brunch yesterday. the shorts seemed bigger in the waist since the last time i wore them, but that was ok because the extra room came in handy after all i ate!

just before xmas, these booties finally went on super-duper sale on zappos.com, so i treated myself. i had been eyeballing them for months. i squealed when they showed up on my doorstep, then i spent an hour sitting in my closet matching them up to everything i have. :)

did you treat yourself to anything nice for xmas or did you get any special prezzies? i hope so!

my saturday was filled with food, friends, shopping and bridges.

we started with brunch at snooze, a yummy little restaurant in hillcrest. we each had our own plate of delicious, but decided we also needed to share a flight of pancakes. you gotta give in to your needs, people.

after a trip to the buffalo exchange and the village hat shop, we went to the spruce street suspension bridge.

what's cool is you can get it rockin' back and forth and scare the pee out of your companions as you walk across. or maybe that's not cool at all since i was the one that was terrified. :-/

we went to the quince street bridge too, but that one was not quite as scary. the best part about the whole day is that tonay likes to drive us around in his pimp wagon and listen to songs like this one...

...because everyone likes a little sexy road music, right?

surgery tank.

tank, the day before surgery.

last year, tank had surgery on his knee to repair a torn ligament. our vet told us then that we shouldn't be surprised if we ended up having to fix his "good knee" later on and boy was she right. i just wasn't expecting to have to fix it so soon. :( i don't think she was either.

tank had his second surgery yesterday and he's finally home after spending the night at the hospital. he's got his pain medicine patch around his neck and he's relaxing like he should (for now).

we live in a townhouse with lots of stairs and because we remembered how hard it was last time to carry him up and down those stairs and then to the dog area outside, we decided to buy a wagon to help and i sewed some straps onto his bed so i can drag him around the house easier. 85 pounds ain't light, people.

the wagon is already turning out to be the best thing EVER. my back was like, "OMG thank you, gurl!"

the next few days will be a little tough, but at least we know from the first time that once his knee gets fixed, it holds up like it should. the weeks to come should be interesting also...i'm not sure if you've ever had to try explaining to a very active dog that he's on activity restriction, but it doesn't go over too well.

and that is why vet-jeebus created acepromazine. :)

ingredients:
1 cup butter, softened
1 cup white sugar
1 cup packed brown sugar
2 eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
3 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
2 teaspoons hot water
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 cups semisweet chocolate chips
1 cup chopped walnuts (optional)

directions:
preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).

cream together the butter, white sugar, and brown sugar until smooth. beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla. dissolve baking soda in hot water. add to batter along with salt. stir in flour, chocolate chips, and nuts. drop by large spoonfuls onto ungreased pans.

bake for about 10 minutes in the preheated oven, or until edges are nicely browned.

1 cup coarsely chopped macadamia nuts
1 cup coarsely chopped white chocolate

directions:
preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).

in a large bowl, cream together the butter, brown sugar, and white sugar until smooth. beat in the eggs, one at a time, then stir in the vanilla and almond extracts. combine the flour, baking soda, and salt; gradually stir into the creamed mixture. mix in the macadamia nuts and white chocolate. drop dough by teaspoonfuls onto ungreased cookie sheets. bake for 10 minutes in the preheated oven, or until golden brown.

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup (113 grams) unsalted butter, room temperature
1 cup (200 grams) granulated white sugar
2 large eggs
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
3/4 cup (75 grams) solid packed, canned pumpkin puree

cream cheese frosting
4 ounces (113 grams) cream cheese, room temperature
2 tablespoons (30 grams) unsalted butter, room temperature
1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1 1/2 cups (175 grams) confectioners (powdered or icing) sugar, sifted

directions:
cupcakes
preheat oven to 350 degrees F (177 degrees C). place rack in the middle of the oven. line 12 muffin cups with paper liners or spray each cup with a non stick vegetable spray.

in a large bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, ground spices, and salt.

in the bowl of your electric mixer, or with a hand mixer, beat the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. add the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. beat in the vanilla extract. scrape down the sides of the bowl. with the mixer on low speed, alternately add the flour mixture and pumpkin puree, in three additions, beginning and ending with the flour mixture.

fill the muffin cups evenly with the batter using two spoons or an ice cream scoop. place in the oven and bake for about 18 - 20 minutes, or until firm to the touch and a toothpick inserted in the center of one of the cupcakes comes out clean. place on a wire rack to cool.

cream cheese frosting
in the bowl of your electric mixer, or with a hand mixer, beat the cream cheese until smooth. add the butter and beat until incorporated and smooth. add the vanilla extract and confectioners sugar and beat until fluffy (2-3 minutes). pipe or spread the frosting on the cupcakes.

so, last night i made the horrible decision to go to walmart to buy some toys when the black friday sales started at 10 pm. walmart was open all thanksgiving day and i figured it would be busy, but i realized pretty quickly that "busy" didn't even begin to describe what was going on there. they had the toy section completed roped off with employees standing by to make sure no one touched anything until 10:01. all the shoppers were corralled like cattle in other aisles that were designated waiting areas. instead of being able to walk directly up to a check out line, the line was 45 minutes long and weaved up and down the grocery aisles of the store. IT WAS MADNESS. i panicked and left before i was pepper sprayed or trampled.

today i wanted to try again, but i was scared that it would still be crazy out or that everything would be gone. after lunch, i took my chances and went to target which ended up being pretty mellow. they were open since midnight so the pushers and grabbers were gone, but there were still lots of sale items available. no long lines and no corrals.

i made it out alive with a cart full of toys for tots. some dolls, board games, a razor scooter and some weird skateboard thingy...i can't wait to drop it all off!!

i've been going non-stop the last two days. cleaning, baking, roasting, shopping...i even put my xmas tree up! good thing i still have the weekend to relax before work.

off to the couch i go!

i put on some real clothes for the first time in weeks and went to happy hour yesterday with a friend. the place was packed with everyone getting their margarita and taco time on, maybe because we'll all be eating turkey and left overs for the next week.

i'm looking forward to cooking, eating too much (thank the jeebus for elastic waistbands) and having a couple extra days off to relax. i hope you all have a nice thanksgiving weekend.

rainy day = soup for dinner. albondigas!!

meatballs:
2 pounds ground beef
1 egg
1/4 cup bread crumbs
1/2 cup uncooked white rice
2 teaspoons ground cumin
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 clove garlic, minced
cilantro, minced

soup:
10 cups chicken broth
4 carrots, sliced
1 large onion, chopped
4 stalks celery, sliced
4 cloves garlic, minced
1 (10 ounce) can diced tomatoes with green chile peppers (like RO*TEL®)
1 (8 ounce) can tomato sauce
1 (7 ounce) can diced green chiles, drained
1 can whole kernel corn
1 bunch cilantro leaves, chopped
1 teaspoon dried oregano
2 teaspoons ground cumin

combine ground beef, egg, bread crumbs, rice, cumin, garlic, cilantro and salt in a large bowl, mix well and work on your meatballs while your broth heats to a boil. once broth is boiling, drop the meatballs in and then simmer for 20 minutes, until meatballs are cooked through.

stir in the carrots, onion, celery, canned diced tomatoes with green chiles, tomato sauce, canned chiles, corn, cilantro, garlic, oregano, and cumin. simmer the soup for 1 hour.

*optional step: put a t-shirt on your dog and play with him while the soup cooks.

when it's all done, i like to garnish the soup with a few tortilla chips, avocado, cilantro and cheese.

i wish i could live in NY during november and december. the folks on the today show have been talking a lot about holiday stuff lately and i'm getting so excited and jealous at the same time! they get to enjoy (in person) two of my favorite things...the macy's thanksgiving day parade AND the giant xmas tree at the rock.

i watch the parade every year. sometimes i watch it twice! besides seeing santa at the very end, i like the marching bands and balloons the most. two new giant balloons will be in the parade this year...sonic the hedgehog and julius the sock monkey. check out the website for the complete parade line-up and don't forget to watch while you're making your turkey!

about a month ago, i was looking at pictures on pinterest of different office nooks and i decided i had to have one. we had a closet in our office that wasn't used for much but storing junk we didn't actually need and i thought that would be the perfect place.

so i cleaned out the closet and called closetworld. the combo of that dancing stickman, the stupid jingle (you know it) and all those pictures of fancy, remodeled closets....their commercials get me every time! i setup an appointment, a consultant came out, i showed her the picture of what i wanted and we scheduled a time to build. the builder came out, did his thing and i had a mini meltdown when i was left with this...

i could barely work in the space because the drawers in the middle took up too much room and i couldn't get my chair under the desk. the desk wasn't deep enough and it was the wrong color. the adjustable shelves got in the way and were a huge eye sore with all those little holes on either side. it was just wrong. all wrong.

i asked for them to come back and take the drawers out, then put in a deeper desktop in the right color. they took down the shelves that they installed and now they are in my spare room waiting to be used for something else because i couldn't get a refund for them or the drawers. :(

after a little time and love, this is what my nook looks like now...

much better right?! i finally got everything finished up last week. i love all the space i have now and the room itself seems bigger.

i painted the walls a light gray color and even bought a few new things for brian's side of the office.

it was tank's birthday yesterday and i made him some doggy cake treats to celebrate.

here's the recipe:

1 cup white or whole wheat flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 cup peanut butter
1/4 veggie oil
1 cup shredded carrots
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/3 cup honey
1 egg

preheat oven, 350 degrees. mix flour and baking soda together. add remaining ingredients and mix well. divide into mini cupcake pans or pour into a 9 inch cake round and bake for 20 minutes. let them cool down a little before feeding them to your doggy.

i "frosted" them with a little fat free cottage cheese. tank loved them!

guys, are you thinking about prezzies yet?! the holidays will be here before you know it! i have lots of gifts to buy and make, so i like to get my shopping started early. i've already started jotting down names on my naughty/nice list.

one of my favorite things to do each year is buying presents for toys for tots. these two pics are from last year. i got a couple little bikes, some helmets, balls, games, dolls, books...eeeeeeeee!

i like to take my car load downtown to the nbc studios when they do their toys for tots drive. the woman in the picture dressed as an elf has been collecting toys there with the marines every year for as long as i can remember.

i have a special place in my heart for the toys for tots foundation. when i was 15, i spent some time in polinsky children's center during the holidays. although the center does amazing things for children in need, i'm not gonna lie...it's depressing and sometimes discouraging to live in a place like that. but for a little while we were able to have some fun and forget where we were when some marines and santa came to pass out toys to all the kids. we got one present each and for most of us that was the only present we received that year. i unwrapped a shiny new walkman. i didn't have very many things to call my own, so i was really happy. i was even happier for the younger kids that had less than i did.

15 year old stuph?! oh my.

toys for tots takes donations for kids of all ages. check out the website for drop off locations and for information about donating online if you don't have time to go shopping. you may not get to see your present being opened, but you really do make a difference in someone's life. believe me, i know!! :)

there used to be a time when i would not even think about wearing a dress. i had a dozen pairs of jeans and dresses were not allowed in my closet unless i had to wear one for a special occasion. now, i have two pairs of jeans and a million dresses and i'm always looking for more!

i love going to the swap meet and walking straight to junk row where all the dusty tchotchkes are to see what kind of neat stuff i can find.

i'm going to use these frames for a little art project that i found on pinterest. i'll post pics when i work on it.

one vendor had at least 5 tables set up with everything under the sun just thrown on them for people to pick through. i found a table with a pile of old pictures on it. call me a weirdo, but it made my heart hurt a little seeing someone's memories tossed around so carelessly, getting dirty and faded from the sun. (note to any family reading this: you people better save my damn pictures when i pass away or i'm gonna haunt the shit outta you. xoxo)

i stood there for a while and looked through them all, noticing the different types of people and clothes and cars. some of the pictures were in color, but most were black and whites. some had notes on the back or just a date. some had stamps on the back from the store where they were developed.

i bought a few of them that i liked. the people in them seem happy and carefree. i love the one of the woman standing in between the cars.

i'm not sure how i'll frame and arrange them, but i do want to put them up somewhere so i can look at them. something about them make me smile.

i threw some pasta together last night for dinner. i started off by roasting some brussels sprouts while i boiled some penne and made some meat sauce. when everything was done, i mixed it all together and put it in a casserole dish, adding goat cheese throughout so when it all baked there would be melty, gooey cheesesplosions inside. i topped the pasta with mozzarella and parmesan and baked it in a 350 degree oven for about 45 minutes. so yummy.

i traveled to reston, va for work last week. instead of sitting in my sweat pants all day like usual, i actually had to put clothes on everyday and go into an office like a grown up!

it was a little difficult to take outfit pics without my tripod, boohoo. and for some reason, it didn't occur to me to just use my phone. i managed to prop my camera up on a canister of almonds and the ice bucket lid from the hotel room. the lighting is bad...these pictures aren't great, but i took 'em so here they are!

when i was in jr. high, the best thing to eat from the cafeteria (aka lunch lady land) were taco salads. they came in a big, fried tortilla bowl. lunch lady dumped a scoop of refried beans in the bottom and then you got to pick if you wanted runny-chickenish meat or runny-beefish meat. they were topped off with iceberg lettuce, chopped tomatoes and shredded cheese. now that i'm thinking about it, i'm kinda grossed out. :-/

in any case, those grossly delishus bowls of mush were my inspiration for dinner last night. mine were better, i promise. this time i made chicken with peppers and black beans for our salads, but i've made them before with ground beef and pinto beans. making them different each time makes them fun!

condiments: cholula, cheese, cilantro, green onions, tomatoes, jalapenos, avocado, sour cream.

here's how i made the chickens...

ingredients:

2 chicken breasts, cut in pieces
1 small to medium sized green bell pepper
1 small to medium sized red bell pepper
1 medium onion
1 large tomato
2 jalapeno peppers
garlic
cilantro
chili powder
cumin
salt
pepper
olive oil

season the chicken with 1 tablespoon of chili powder, a dash of cumin and salt and pepper to taste. heat the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat and saute the chicken until it's no longer pink. remove it from the skillet and keep it warm.

in same skillet, stir-fry the bell peppers and onion until they're soft. add some minced garlic and cilantro to taste and stir. then add the jalapeno peppers, tomato and another sprinkle of chili powder. stir for 3 to 5 minutes, add the chicken back in and stir for 2 minutes more.

put that meat in your taco bowl and EAT! don't forget beans and veggies.

the weather is cooling down here and i love it. time for sweaters, boots and PLAID.

i made this skirt using this tutorial. i've actually made 4 skirts using that tutorial...they're so easy, i can't stop!

in other news, i restored my pictures on my laptop and was able to get them all back on the blog. no more foto disaster...yay!

i had a foto disaster and unless i can figure out how to recover things, most of my blog posts from about mid-april until now are going to be missing tons of pictures. :(

i just can't seem to figure out how to get them to restore completely. i see the picture thumbnails, but when i click on them i just get a big gray exclamation point. i'm totally bummed. i'll just have to figure out a new strategy for backing up now, i guess.

i'm much better at dealing with these types of issues in the pc world...when it comes to macs, i get so confused! if anyone has any helpful suggestions, let me know. i import my photos into iphoto from my camera and use my time capsule for backups.

guys, i love ann curry. she might be the nicest person on tv and one of the best dressed! she had an outfit on today and i loved everything about it. i liked the polka dot tights the most.

i was checking out modcloth this morning (as usual) and came across these shoes.

my first thought was, "those have GOTTA hurt" and that was followed by, "how the hell do you walk in that craziness without busting an ankle?!"

i took my sister and cousin out today to visit some spots in san diego they'd never been to before. the tour included the tide pools, lighthouse, a drive by the midway and kissing statue, lunch and margaritas in the gaslamp, and a quick trip to the botanical garden in balboa park. it was a good day! i love living in a vacation city.

i've worn this dress once before and i swear it didn't seem that short then! i noticed the length when i tried it on again this past weekend and it almost went in the goodwill pile. then i remembered seeing bobbie thomas on the today show one morning, talking about this pretty slip with lace trim on the bottom (yes, i watch the today show). the lace peeks out from the bottom of a short skirt or dress and adds a little length.

instead of buying the slip i went to joann's, bought some lace, pinned it to the bottom of my dress and sewed it up. i love the way it turned out and it's only a little longer, but i felt better wearing it afterwards. i made my way to the dmv to get my picture taken for a new ID. too bad the pretty lace won't be in the pic. :)
